Phase 3: Create/Discuss: Inquiry Lesson Demonstration

Inquiry Demonstration Plan

Lesson Title: Significance of Pythagorean Theorem Lesson  # 1 Date: 2020-07-28
Name: Gurpreet Singh Subject(s): Mathematics Grade(s): 8

Rationale & Overview

Why does this topic matter to students?

Pythagorean theorem is quite significant in fostering creativity and complex problem-solving strategies in the young minds. It also assists in understanding other disciplines of education along with finding out unknown parameter by evaluating two other measurements.

How does this lesson fit within the larger inquiry project?

This plan deals with the relevance of Pythagorean theorem in today’s world and further which is connected to almost every sector of educational working. Focus is given on crucial need to understand Pythagorean concept so that critical thinking can be fostered in the real-world situations.

How does this project incorporate the inquiry cycle?

Students become aware of the importance of mathematical formula and this will be ensured through proper field learning techniques rather than just imparting bookish knowledge.

Key Questions For Inquiry

Core Question & Supporting Questions for Inquiry Project Question(s) Addressed in This Lesson

How relevant it is in the daily routine lifestyle to study about it?

First People’s Principle:

Does it impart any kind of symbolic message to the spiritual growth of an individual or is it just a play of integers only?

Scope and applications of Pythagorean theorem.

How and in what ways it is utilized in other areas of education?

Does it need updating to fit into the current educational paradigm?

Is there any other scope of using this formula rather than finding out measurements?

Are there any historical evidences of this theorem that can be related to current scenario?

Inquiry Approach and Rationale

Focus will be given through storytelling by the elders of the community to better understand the significance of mathematical formula (like pyramids in the existing world). It will impart a lively experience of mathematical teaching, which otherwise assumes as a rigid subject. Field activities like paper folding will be organized to better understand the concept of Pythagorean concept and its usage in the current scenario.

Core Principles of Effective Teaching (Sharon Friesen) Focus on one or more core principles in the lesson

Core Principle 1: Effective teaching practice begins with the thoughtful and intentional design of learning that engages students intellectually and academically.

*What aspects of the inquiry are the most challenging and meaningful for students?

Interdisciplinary approach and the significance of Pythagorean concept in daily routine would be a remarkable experience for the students.
Core Principle 2: The work that students are asked to undertake is worthy of their time and attention, is personally relevant, and deeply connected to the world in which they live.

*What makes this inquiry valuable, meaningful, and “alive” for the students and teachers?

Core Principle 3: Assessment practices are clearly focused on improving student learning and guiding teaching decisions and actions.

*How do I define learning and success in this inquiry? How is learning expressed and articulated in peer, self, and teacher assessments?

It relates the concept to each, and every step walk of daily activities, like construction and other designing concepts. Thus, is quite interesting to find out the unknown parameters

Assessment will be measured how accurately a student can relate Pythagorean theorem in real life implication and how quickly he or she observe this mathematical formula in daily routine.

Core Principle 4: Teachers foster a variety of interdependent relationships in classrooms that promote learning and create a strong culture around learning.

*How do I connect students with each other, with experts in the field, with larger communities and nature, and across disciplines?

Storytelling through elders, individually or as a whole group would be ensured to deeply connect mathematical ideas with first people’s principle of learning.
Core Principle 5: Teachers improve their practice in the company of peers.

*How do I reflect on the inquiry together, and/or collaborate with others?

Self reflection and introspection with careful observation will result  in healthy culture of learning mathematical concepts.
