Welcome

Hello Everyone,

I am Gurpreet Singh and identify myself as he/him. Gurpreet is a Sikh name which means  “beloved of the teacher“. I come from a farming background and have done my Bachelors and then Masters in Mechanical Engineering due to my interest in Science and Technology from Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra (the holy place of epic battle Mahabharata).

I have taught engineering students for a short time of 6 months, then my interest in teaching further allured me to pursue M.Ed. to polish teaching skills and to find out the real purpose  of education. I believe teaching as a profession where one can fully utilize his learning to shape a better future of mankind.

I like old classical and Sufi music.  I am very cheerful and talkative, believe in making friends to spread a smile on their faces. Also, I cook some of the Punjabi dishes very well.  I owe all of my learning to my parents and my tutors who gave me a beautiful way of living this precious life.

Hi Gurpreet,

Thank you for sharing where you come from and the meaning of your name. I find meaning very interesting! My name means “Great tree”… not as cool as yours 😛

Here’s my feedback:
STAR: Math can be challenging for some students who cannot relate theory to the real world. I think that your approach of using mathematical skills to show students how they work in the real world is an exceptional idea. You write about encouraging students to ask questions and get hands on experience of how the theorem applies in the real world. I think that this will allow students to acquire a deeper understanding of the formula and be able to independently incorporate it in their lives.

WISH: I wish that the Principals of First Nation’s education were used to describe how you will incorporate Indigenous knowledge and principles of learning.

QUESTION: I am curious how will the interdisciplinary approach and the significance of Pythagorean concept in daily routine be a remarkable experience for the students? You describe this in your first core principal in phase 3. What makes it remarkable?

Hello Gurpreet,

Unfortunately I do not see your unit plan uploaded yet, but luckily I was able to hear your lesson demonstration and will give you some feedback on the rest of your website.

STAR: You are so knowledgable about this topic, and are confident about the underlying theory regarding the formula itself. I think your passion for mathematics led you to an interesting and important topic for inquiry.

WISH: You have a large number of questions, and I think it may be difficult to cover them all, especially in regards to a singular formula. Three questions that stood out to me are:

How relevant it is in the daily routine lifestyle to study about it?

What are the chances of its failure?

Is there any alternate to find solution without using this formula?

I think you could do a lot fo work and inquiry around these 3 questions alone. Students would like to know how topics are alive and apply to their world outside of school (especially in math!). You can answer the “why are we learning this?” type of questions through exploration of the above.
How is Pythagorean theorem used in the workforce? (Connect this to the chances of its failure- I am assuming if it has made it this far the chances are low, meaning it is accurate and necessary for construction, engineering, etc.) I think exploring if there is a chance of it’s failure, or if there is another way besides the formula to solve these problems is a great way to prove its importance!

Inspiration/Wonder:

I mentioned this before to you, but I wonder if you could include some stories or history behind the theorem. It may help students become invested if they know why the theorem was created, and maybe the problem the ancient people were trying to solve?

I also know you were looking at games or activities that apply the theorem, so I would love to see if you find or create any!

Thank you for sharing Gurpreet. It has been awesome working with you this semester! I wish you all the best in your future studies!

I appreciate your concern Ali, you can see whole of the content again. I will reflect your suggestions in my future work.
